Don 2 - Good watch

I finally got to watch SRK's Don 2 and generally liked it. It was a bit below my expectations but still worth the long wait and watch.

Story line: This does not seem to be really original. It is a mix of several English movies like Ocean's Eleven and Entrapment.

Acting: Boman Irani and Priyanka have done well and without this star power the movie would have failed. SRK was good but he was better in the first movie, he was lacking the evil Don personality. He did perform the bungee jump from the 100 floor building himself.

Direction: Farhan Akthar of the Dil Chata Hai fame has done a decent job and kept the overall feel like the previous movie.

Locations and cinematography were great.

So overall a good watch.

I liked this movie - cast, story and direction were really good. It is about a cop solving a murder mystery where the victim was his girlfriend. The ghost of the victim haunts and kills the culprits. It has only 3 songs, all of them just background - music is also good.

I watched Mani Ratnam's Raavan. The movie has aspects of real Ramayan - Raavan (Abishek), Ram (Vikram), Sita (Aishwarya) and Hanuman (Govinda) and focuses on Sita's apharan (kidnapping). The movie reminded me of Dil Se - minus the Preity Zinta part and is not an entertainer but a serious drama.

It is worth a watch due to strong cast, screen play and direction; but story line is not great and the ending is a big disappointment.

This is 2009 movie, Wake Up Sid directed by Ayan Mukarjee, winner of debutant Filmfare award. At first I was not interested in seeing another college movie, but this is a good watch. It is handling current youth issues - life after college, parents, friendship, struggle for finding a job, living relationships, love without age being a criteria. Performance from Konkana Sen (page 3 fame) and Ranbir is brilliant, however I did not see any screen chemistry between the two. The movie also gives a glimpse of Mumbai - Worli sea face, bungalows and apartments with the city as a background. As far as audio goes, it is OK with "Iktara" being the highlight. I like the start of this song with good lyrics and deep voice of Kavita Seth which fetched her a Filmfare.

This movie is now in Netflix. I liked the movie - simple, no songs, just a message in a world full of corruption - that being honest and doing things right (without bribes) can lead to success. Ranbir Kapoor is the main star and has done a great job.

The movie is about a college graduate that starts a new job as a salesman in Mumbai. He just does not fit with the normal sales life and is soon pronounced a failure. With little help he starts his own company on the principles of honesty and customer service and wins trust of several new clients.

It is worth a watch.

Great song from Love Aaj Kal. The movie is wicked by Imtaz Ali, a must watch describing how couples find love now and how it was 30 years ago. Saif Ali Khan produced this and hence dominates the movie taking on two roles (not necessary IMO); the best part of this movie is Hardeen who is acted by a Brazalian model, very hard to tell. This movie is planned to be recreated in South Indian languages.

Anurag Basu's last movie Gangster was great and story line mirrored a western movie. This movie Metro is good but only caters for certain set of population. The movie is about complications in relationships and adultery. It makes fun of this serious matter.

I liked the cast - very talented and superb performances by Shiney, Kay Kay, Irfan, and Shilpa. However I don't agree that life in metro is really that crazy, o well this is just a movie. The movie got lucky at that time since Shilpa Shetty had won the UK reality show - Big Brother.

I hope to enjoy on DVD when it is released. I know Uday is big on stopping piracy; I just hope the industry however learns that DVD and streaming is an extremely powerful medium and if they find a way to charge every person streaming online say within 15 days of movie release, the collections in this new medium would be huge. This is a sad coincidence, i was watching "The Ramen Girl" over the weekend with Brittany Murphy the lead star who just died from cardiac arrest at the age of 32. In my opinion she was talented, had the girl next door look and had a long career ahead of her. Watch this trailer which summarizes the movie - American girl gets deserted by her boy friend in Tokyo and then gets crazy about cooking ramen. The culture challenges and communication barrier is also shown well. The movie is OK to watch, does get boring in between and it is very predictable.

Just watched Russel Crowe and DiCaprio staring movie.
Story: The movie touches current situation in Iraq; and the global war on terror. What to expect next, and who can one really trust? Isn't this real life situation?

Cast: I loved the role and the acting of Mark Strong, the Jordanian intelligence head. DiCaprio has a powerful role but I did not find him convincing. Others did a decent job.

Notable Moments: When DiCaprio first visits the Jordanian girlfriend played by Golshifteh - the customs are so different - a simple hand shake is considered not appropriate. Next DiCaprio loosing his fingers - not a pretty site.

This is a new movie having a lot of star power - Aamir, Karena and Madhavan + Vidhu Vinodh Chopra (producer) + Rajkumar Hirani (director). The movie is based on a novel (Five Point Someone) by Chetan Bhagat who became an overnight star with his One night at a call center novel.

It is about a group of friends that struggle to get a good GPA at college and how that affects their career, friends and life.

Delhi 6 - good movie

Omprakash Mehra has another good movie - Delhi 6; while his last movie Rang De Basanti was a superhit, this one did OK. The director however continues to pick up tough issue - this time it is religion and caste. I liked the flow of the movie but most of it seemed predictable and one sees a glimpse from other movies like SRK's Swades.

Notable scenes - song at NY times square, conflict scene between Hindu and Muslim that pair up as soon as they find a common cause.I don't want to be a spoiler but the director has made the ending too long and full of suspense.

I recently watched an interview of Nasarudin Shah where I echo his comment, why do Indian directors stick to the standard themes - religion and suppression of woman. In current age there are several other issues that bug the 1 billion Indians.

Defiance - great true story

I watched Defiance on DVD today and it is a definite watch. Movie is about a jewish camp that is trying it's best to survive the German attack just prior to World World 2. The movie is slow and touches various aspects. It shows how the Bielski brother's escape the Nazi slaughter; then help several hundreds. One of the brother's separate out as one joins the army while other stays with the camp.
Casting is great and some scenes are noteworthy for special mention:
* Camp struggle especially when winter strikes.
* The wedding which is run parallel with the fight against Germans.
* Fight for medicine at the German police station.

District 9 - interesting and different

The movie is like a documentary about an alien refugee camp. It starts with a footage that shows a huge spaceship over the city of Joahansburg, South Africa. After 20 years the local population is irritated with the aliens who are nick named "Prawns". The special division dealing with Aliens (MNU) is given the charter to move these aliens to a different camp far from the city. During this exercise of ejecting them, the main star, Sharlto Copley is infected by a chemical and slows turns into one of the aliens.
The movie is overall interesting but parts of it are stupid and weird - for instance the 24 hour evacuation notice to aliens who don't have any other choice. It is also not clear as to how only some humans understand the alien language.
If you are expecting any action like Predator or Aliens - forget about it.

I just watched the Deepak Tijori movie "Fox" staring Arjun Rampal. Movie is a drama about a lawyer fed of defending criminals. He leaves the criminal life and starts a new life in Goa where he meets an author who plans to publish a book. The original author dies and Arjun publishes the book under his name. Watch the rest.. as it does take a twist here. Overall the movie is OK. Arjun's action is not great; Sunny Deol has a play but too little in my opinion.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but it seems to be worth a watch and is based on the English movie "She is the man". Rani pretends to be a guy to play T20 cricket against Pakistan. The English version was based on soccer.

Based on the reviews, movie fails to do good in social or sports aspects, for instance - you just cannot chase a 200+ score when you are down 49 for 9. Nevertheless if want to enjoy some slight stupid and funny movie, i would say go for this one. It is produced under Yash banner.

The Hauting in Connecticut - Scary

Just watched this on DVD today, this is about a haunted house which was at one time a mortuary. The family that moves into this place sees supernatural activity - this is based on a true story and at times real scary. The family has one teenager who is sick and about to die keeps getting images of a dead young kid who tries to tell the story of the house.

This was an OK movie, if you have seen the first one, this sequel will seem very similar and not much of a change. It has some good moments. Steve Martin is great with the French accent, the rest of the cast is just OK.

Aishwarya Rai Bachan was the other reason i wanted to see this; she does not really steal the thunder. It is however good to see main stream Bollywood star in an English movie. She is smart and looks great and has done a decent job. However her role and the movie are short.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose - True story

I was watching this on the local TV station and the movie is scary. The scary part is not the movie itself, it is the fact that it is a true story. It raises the question - if the belief of supernatural "God" exists, then are demons also real?
The movie is the court drama of "People vs Father Richard Moore" which details the events that lead and the eventual exorcism of Emily Rose. Quantam of Solace - good action

Bond movies are generally fascinating, action and drama packed. This movie does live up to the expectations. The movie is rich in locations, style and cast. Daniel Craig is pretty convincing and this is his 2nd movie as Bond (not 3rd as quoted earlier). Olga Kurylenko is ok, but does not get close to Eva Green (from Casino Royale).

Now the negatives... the plot of the movie is not deep and the story does not have a good flow. The link between oil, water and politics is not good.

Overall, it is still good for a Bond fan and the series continues.

8 * 10 Tasveer - decent drama - worth watching

After my friend's recommendation I saw Nagesh Kuknoor's decent drama - worth a watch on DVD. The movie has Akshay Kumar with extraordinary power to go back in time and see the past - only one minute at a time. He uses this power to solve his father's murder. The story will keep you engaged till the end and in my opinion is a simple murder mystery when compared to what we see in TV shows like 24, CSI. There is no good chemistry between Ayesha Takia and Akshay and she is not convincing. The senior cast is wasted and are only there for a very brief period - Girish Karnard, Annat Mahadevan and Sharmila Tagore. Javed Jaffery is good and adds some fun to the movie.

Mummy - Tomb of Emperor - average

This is the 3rd of the Mummy sequel. Movie is average and is now out on DVD. The story line is similar to the first movie except that it is set in China. What i liked = Jet Li getting the idea of being immortal; discovery of the lost army; the sangrila diamond and the snow creatures and some action scenes. What was not that great = middle of the movie was little boring; action scenes look just ok - not great; the cast looked weird - the main actor does not look too old and has a 20+ old son.

Bottom line: Watch it if you are a Mummy fan for the action scenes and adventure. It is however not as exciting as the 1st one.

Valkyrie - average movie

This is based on a true story and regarding the world's worst enemy Hitler which has captivated people for ages. It is educational for young kids and depict life as it was in 1940's. This being a true story, the outcome is not a surprise to anyone - so it does not have any surprise factor. It is generally slow and gets the audience ready for Cruise's failed attempt to kill Hitler. The acting, casting and dramatisation are good, and hence it is worth seeing. However I would have liked the movie to bring in some context and show how Hitler rose to power and how the Alliance against him grew and led to his final collapse.

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi - Review - Good

First of all, SRK has done a brilliant job as always :) Now my review...

In the era of too many characters and complex plots, this is different; it is focused on only 3 characters = SRK as Mr Suri an old guy, SRK as Raj a young guy and the heroine. The first half builds up the story line - Anushka marries SRK as a formality to keep her father's last wish. SRK is in love with her but she does not love him and the couple has no real relationship. Later Anushka joins a Dance competition and SRK changes his form as a young guy and joins the same competition as her partner. Anushka slowly falls in love with SRK as "Raj".

Aditya Chopra was not able to handle the 2nd half of this movie. He does build up the dilemma about whom should the heroine pick - Raj or Suri?? When and how should Raj reveal to her that he is her husband? Another question, how can this heroine be so dumb to no recognize the similarities of the double role?

The movie is an entertainer (paise vasul) so enjoy the movie and don't think too much :) Watch out for the rich and funny song.. "Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar ke, Phir Milenge, Chalte Chalte"

This is most awaited movie of the year...King Khan + Aditya Chopra combination. The expectation is too high and some speculate this will be as good as "dilwale dulhania le jayenge".

Time will tell - I'll keep you folks posted as soon as I learn more on this..

Hindi movie - A Wednesday - an eye opener

My close friend called and asked me to watch this movie saying it was a good one. Thanks to the internet, I was able to watch it and really enjoyed it. It is a story regarding the several bomb blasts that Mumbai has a victim since 1992. Can a common man do something about this? How long should the common man live under fear - one is not sure if he/she will be safe travelling on the local train or the bus?

This movie raises a bigger question - will the real world follow this reel story? Indians have seen too many of these attacks, just yesterday there were 2 more blasts have rocked Delhi. When will these attacks stop?

X Files - I want to beleive - average

This weekend I did also get to watch X-Files the new release (I want to believe). The plot is weak and the actors are getting very old - especially Scully. I loved X-files the TV series and it generally had an alien piece to the puzzle, this movie does not have that surprise element. It does have the usually X-files erie music and some twists and turns but overall not a great movie.

Breach - good movie

I watched Breach on DVD, which iss based on a true story of an FBI agent who sells secrets to Russian agents. Chris Cooper (main actor) and Laura Linney deliver very believable action. Since the storyline is clear from the start there is less drama but there are few scenes where instant reactions are key which are shown pretty well. Worth watching on a weekend night.

Jannat - movie review

This is a good movie and the bettings and money is very real; this does happen and millions of dollars were traded during the past world cup.

The story line is the key for the movie, simple and real. It is always good to see a little guy from Dharavi slums suddenly becoming powerful and rich, as if he has won a lottery.

Direction was generally good for the first half; 2nd half was not carefully planned. Emraan is very natural, Miss India Sonal looks good, but acting was poor and there was no real screen chemistry with Emraan. The Indian police inspector (could not get his name) was promising and I hope gets better roles.

Pritam's music is good, with 2 songs standing out from the rest - title and Zara Sa.

Babel review - do not watch

I rented the movie Babel this weekend and the movie is very hard to watch. It is interesting and covers stories in 4 countries - US, Moroco, Mexico and Japan.

Pros: Global movie that shows different lifestyles in their own country. Good preformances from Brad, Japanese girl, Morocan kid and the Mexican baby sitter.

Cons: Some scenes were too graphic and hard to watch - like the chicken's head being cut and headless chicken running around; young kids dealing with their body parts; poverty in Moroco and Mexico (way to real). Also the story is very loosely coupled and the Japan connection is very weak.

Verdict: stay way from this movie.

I usually don't write about serials, but I kind of like this one currently airs on NBC (Mondays - primetime). Checkout the real Allison DuBois - this whole series was based on a real person who can see dead people - very hard to believe but there are some folks who actually do see such things.

Game Plan - a complete family movie

I recommend this movie for the complete family. It has comedy, drama, sports and a surprise ending. The movie has some similarity to Adam Sadler's Big Daddy where Rock is suddenly handling a 8 year old girl unexpected and learns the meaning of having a family. Do not miss the features of the house shown at the start.

Disney has delivered a great movie again.
